Christopher Turner talks to the SF Chronicle about his relationship with Armistead Maupin, telling the paper that Maupin, who is 27 years older than Turner. Love Stories: Armistead Maupin and Christopher Turner Shy probably isn't the first word that comes to mind when one thinks of Armistead Maupin, celebrated author of the Tales of the City series.
Armistead Maupin, photographed by Christopher Turner. In the mid-’70s, when Armistead Maupin first went to bed with Rock Hudson, the ‘50s heartthrob had a surprise up his sleeve. He pulled out “the cutest little poppers case you’ve ever seen,” says Maupin, chatting on a recent afternoon in his cozy south London home. Armistead (left), pictured with husband Christopher Turner, who he wed in “I won’t embarrass anybody by talking about how great our sex life is – but I’ve got good news for ya if you hang in there!” Of course, the question on every fan’s lips is whether Tales might return for another outing.

During the AIDS crisis, everything we saw, in advertising and porn, suddenly became young and clean…Attraction is hard to understand. HEARST: A friend of mine lives on the street where you and Chris did, a street that had once been inhabited almost entirely by gay couples.
The year-old has just finished doing exactly that. That evening, I met this big-bearded gent with a nose ring who, when he was a young blond stud at the same bar, had welcomed Freddie Mercury and Princess Diana. With Armistead, he's 27 years my senior and, you know, he'll likely die before me. And success gave me more freedom. He also paid handsomely for it.
The moment I had my hand in his, the lights went out. Maupin has lost famous friends, he says, because he pressed them on coming out and in reaction they severed the relationship rather than the lie. We were at a point in history where this had to be done. And he was driven by the pain we felt, by the loss of our friends. If I was fucking Rock Hudson, I would tell my mother first thing. Tales had binge reading going for it before it had a name.
I remember he had to die on stage and when his body hit the ground it was like thunder, like timber falling. Maupin had said goodbye to his parents to attend the march with his friends. And I do like being around gay folks, naked or otherwise. My current attraction toward older men has been around since I can remember, but I imagine that could change. The misery and shame that had throttled him for 25 years dissipated as he came out, shifting his fervour from right- to left-wing politics.
That was most perfectly illustrated for me when I wrote Significant Others. After waiting years for literary recognition, when television beckoned, it was booby-trapped. But he remembers the night that she came in. She had her show and everything else.
I know a kid in Uganda, where the tabloids publish pictures of gay activists and where people come and kill them. I'm really not sure. When I realized I could do that for straight folks, too… What the fuck is it called, when they sit in their car? I wanted to do Mona [Ramsey, of Tales of the City] again because I had kind of famously ignored her and people remarked on it.
Fans introduced themselves to you. That's always the issue with an age difference. We hopped in the sack together.
